“What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great person is one who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Karl Marx once said “There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad, and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”

My 11th year math teacher told me this: “Your friendship group will change every three years. So don’t give up opportunities for people who won’t be there when push comes to shove. There will be few exceptions over the years, hold onto those people tight.”
At that moment in class my head was already planning out my weekend with people I “knew” would be there forever.
I was wrong.
